Even most of my teammates are getting offers or talking to scouts after games, but for me it’s just crickets. I feel like something's missing, I just dunno what I have to do differently.”
He hadn’t been home in 2 off-seasons, but now sat in our gym office clearly dejected and uncertain about whether he should just accept that he wasn’t a D1 player or change something.
We encouraged him to have a conversation with his coach, get honest feedback on his game, and then we could chat further.
“He said he always recommends me to scouts when they ask about guys they should be watching, and is surprised I don’t have offers. He’s even asked a couple of Coaches and they say it’s a skating game in D1 and a big jump in speed – and they just don’t think my game could translate to the next level.”
This stung – but it was good feedback.
So we connected him with a local power skating coach and asked him to look at his skating to see where it could improve.
“He’s a great player & a smooth skater, of course we could clean up a couple of things, but honestly his problem is that he just doesn’t have that punch in his stride or first steps. It’s like he’s hitting the gas but his car just doesn’t have the horsepower to really let it rip.”
It was clear, it wasn't his on-ice mechanics holding him back – he had to develop explosive power.
